Kent Fastrack

Real-time passenger information services and ticketing

Cityspace has worked in partnership with Kent Fastrack since early 2006 providing passenger services to enhance the award-winning Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) scheme, which plays an integral part of the multi-million pound Kent Thameside regeneration area within the Thames Gateway.

Having designed and installed a digital transport network delivering real-time passenger information and interactive journey planning services for Fastrack Route B (serving Dartford to Gravesend and the new Ebbsfleet International) in 2007, Cityspace has since deployed a ground-breaking off-bus ticketing network going live in summer 2008.

The 23-strong network of ticket machines delivers the very latest in passenger technology; easy-to-use, intuitive touch screens issuing the full range of bus service tickets and passes using credit/debit cards, or cash with change.

“The easy-to-use, interactive touch-screen passenger services designed and managed by Cityspace have undoubtedly contributed to passenger uptake of Fastrack services. In delivering the ticketing solution, Cityspace has worked hard to provide another intuitive service, giving Fastrack the first large-scale UK deployment of ticket vending machines incorporating touch screen technology for bus passengers.”

Essex County Council

Essex County Council has selected Cityspace to deploy Cityspace Vision, an integrated content management system to support its expanding Park & Ride initiative. The system will also carry real-time information and services to the existing network of Smart Columns at interchanges, bus stops and passenger hubs in Chelsmford.

Cityspace Vision is a highly advanced content management system which will provide Essex with the tools to broadcast travel, traffic and real-time bus and rail information and disruption notices at the point of need with the capability to broadcast emergency and public service messages.

“Cityspace Vision is a clever, low maintenance integrated system which hands us full control. We are looking at expanding it to encompass a mobile phone service for bus arrival times – these are the kinds of services which will get people to buy in to public transport.”

Hampshire County Council

Real-time travel information network

Cityspace is working with Hampshire County Council to help stimulate modal shift by delivering sustainable transport services in Hedge End, an area undergoing substantial growth across residential, leisure, business and retail.

Build is now underway on a network of 24 Smart Help Points, providing links to Traveline for new users and visitors to the area; 24 multimedia Smart Screens delivering real-time and other valuable information within new high quality bus shelters; three Smart Columns sited at key hubs, such as transport interchanges, retail and development areas and Cityspace Vision, an advanced content management system offering rich media format for travel information and local news.

“This important development at Hedge End offers the opportunity to expand the existing networks and assess the benefits of intensive deployment in a concentrated area.”

“With this high profile project, we’re really raising the bar. We needed a supplier with a shared ethos for delivering the highest quality solutions and we’re in no doubt that Cityspace will rise to the challenge.”

York, ftr

Travel information and interactive services for First Group pioneering bus network

In 2006, Cityspace worked in partnership with City of York Council and First Group to design and deploy a state-of-the-art digital transport information network to support its pioneering ftr scheme in the heart of this historic city.

Built on a wireless infrastructure, a network of Smart Columns was installed at major bus hubs across the city, giving passengers real-time bus departure and disruption information, journey planning with print outs and interactive services such as free email, BBC News and the weather.

"Giving our customers the information they want, when they need it, is at the heart of the ftr vision. The information available through the Cityspace Smart Columns combine with real-time information displays at stops, on-board the ftr, and available on mobile phones, to really transform travel."

South Yorkshire PTE

Real-time passenger information and interactive services network with customised content management

Following an EU procurement process in 2006, SYPTE commissioned a network of indoor and outdoor interactive terminals from Cityspace at selected pedestrian hubs within South Yorkshire.
Today Travel South Yorkshire boasts 14 indoor and outdoor Cityspace interactive terminals in Sheffield City hubs and its South Yorkshire Travel Guide has been integrated into Doncaster’s network of 38 Cityspace touch screen terminals with the network registering over 10,000 enquiries a month.

SYPTE developed the content and tailored the output of each terminal to make it relevant to the transport network operating in each hub and is now working towards giving specific disruption and related journey planning options. This customised content runs in parallel to the raft of passenger services developed by Cityspace, including journey planning, local area maps and print outs.

Cityspace worked in close partnership with each deployment, advising on location and environmental considerations - critically, the positioning of the service at key community and passenger hubs and interchanges significantly impacts uptake and improves user confidence in taking control over their journeys.

“In partnership with Cityspace, I believe we are making a real step-change in driving confidence in public transport by giving people the opportunity to help themselves to travel information while they are on the move.

“Our research has shown that people are more likely to use public transport if they feel in control of their journey – these are the tools which equip the public to take that control and Cityspace has proven to be the most progressive partner to deliver on this vision.”
