Merseyrail
In February 2008, Merseyrail contracted Cityspace to install complete customer information and services networks at the five unstaffed stations in the Wirral along this vital urban network serving Liverpool and Merseyside.
Due to go live by Autumn 08, the planned services for Little Sutton, Bache, Capenhurst, Overpool and Ellesmere Port in the Wirral will comprise seven Cityspace Smart Points providing ticketing and Permit to Travel. Interactive touch screens will offer access to real-time passenger information, online journey planning, timetables, local area maps with print outs and customised digital travel content. Each unit features a highly visible broadcast screen for live bus and rail departure summaries, planned engineering notices and publicity content. As an added feature to address passenger safety an emergency help point has been fitted to each unit.
“Cityspace came to us with a cost effective combination of passenger services to address the needs inherent in lightly used, unstaffed stations. This project will directly address security perceptions which affect people’s decision to travel on public transport. It will also support our revenue protection drive through Permit to Travel services whilst delivering a vastly enhanced passenger waiting experience.”
Bart Schmeink, Merseyrail’s Managing Director
First TransPennine Express
Cityspace completed a 34-strong network of digital help points for First Group’s TransPennine Express in Spring 2008, less than 12 months from winning the contract.
These interactive touch screen units represent the beginning of an information revolution at station level providing TransPennine Express passengers with up-to-the-minute information at their fingertips. Real-time departures and disruptions from National Rail Enquiries (NRES), a local taxi finder, station maps and local weather are the first services to be piloted on the new network.
“'The Cityspace Help Points provide an important, cost-effective element of Customer Information Services at FTPE stations, building on our investment in CIS. In particular, they provide passengers with information to assist them with their onward journeys.”
Liam Gent, UK Rail Project Manager, First Group TransPennine Express
St Pancras International
Cityspace is proud to be installing a high-speed wireless broadband public network at St Pancras International, under contract by London & Continental Stations and Property Ltd (LCSP).
Going live in summer 2008, the showcase project will see two floors of the £800m redeveloped St Pancras International flooded with Wi-Fi, enabling the 45 million people estimated to travel through the new international terminus every year to access the internet, view real-time national rail timetables, plan their journeys and generally linger longer.
The first of its kind anywhere in Europe, the St Pancras International wireless network will also support the station Customer Information Services by delivering real-time information to staff hand held devices.
“Ubiquitous high speed connectivity throughout St Pancras International makes communication and information an integral part of the ‘meet me at St Pancras’ experience and helps to position the station as a world-class destination.
“Cityspace has helped us deliver this high-speed, free public access broadband service of great value to passengers and visitors to St Pancras alike. It will also enhance our Customer Information Services by supporting mobile devices throughout the station.”
Steve Vidler, Station Operations Delivery Manager, LCSP
