Outdoor Broadband Services for everyone
Cityspace, developer of urban digital networks, delivers Outdoor Broadband Services for everyone which:
- mobilise workforces using PDAs and laptops
- reduce telecoms costs by wirelessly connecting infrastructure such as CCTV cameras
- ensure social inclusion by delivering free online services, for instance via touch screen terminals
Broadband is a reality in homes and offices - where it is available and people or organisations can afford it - but delivery out of home is currently patchy.
For instance, although there are some wireless broadband (Wi-Fi) hotspots in select areas, such as cafes and hotels, there is no over-arching strategy to provide universal coverage.
Local authorities can act to unify provision across the community:
- As the main beneficiary of Outdoor Broadband
- As an enabler for other parties
And, hence they are sponsoring the first new urban amenity of the 21st Century.
Supporting Government Policies
Broadband:
The Government believes that rapid rollout and adoption of broadband across the UK is important to both its social and economic objectives.
Government Broadband Policy, 2003
Cityspace makes the Government's policy a reality by providing:
- Broadband for everyone through iPlus Networks of on-street interactive touch screen terminals, which deliver free and easy to use services such as council information and jobs. See What is iPlus? for more.
- Broadband everywhere - through StreetNet, a wireless (Wi-Fi) network which delivers true high-speed internet services across wide areas, so instantly offering a broad range of uses and applications. See What is StreetNet? for more.
- eGovernment policies are also supported by Cityspace networks as they provide on-street digital access to council services, as well as offering a means of feeding back directly to council departments. See What is iPlus? for more.
- Transport Direct's strategy, which aims to encourage the public to adopt sustainable modes of transport, such as public transport, walking and cycling, is supported by Cityspace Travel Services. Cityspace delivers Services for Transport, which ensure towns and cities can maintain a strong, efficient and popular transport infrastructure by providing services from real-time passenger information and journey planning through to timetabling and ticketing.
